Cross-Layer Web Innovation
Nokia Bell Labs, USA
Abstract: The Web is a complex ecosystem composed of a plethora of browsers, servers implementation, and "protocols". In this talk, Dr. Matteo Varvello will review the current state of the Web along with its recent evolution. Next, he will focus on how to perform Web research, covering key tools and methodologies. Finally, he will talk about several Web innovations he has recently proposed, from protocols to mechanisms to speedup the Web while saving user resources like data and battery.
Matteo Varvello is a networking researcher at Nokia Bell Labs since July 2020. He has authored many papers on high-quality conferences and journals, such as CoNEXT, WWW, INFOCOM, HotNets, TON, JSAC, TWEB, etc. In the past, he had the chance to conduct research at many top-tier research labs: Technicolor, Telefonica, and AT&T. At each place, He worked on new areas which contributed to his broad expertise and research interests: peer-to-peer, content-centric networking, software-defined networking, video and virtual reality, packet processing, web and mobile experience. At core, he is a system researcher who likes to build innovative systems and protocols with a global reach. This motivated him to explore, in the last few years, the startup world. In 2017, he had launched TAPPAS, his own venture which enables testing of mobile applications with thousands of worldwide testers. In 2019, he had joined Brave, the privacy-preserving web browser, where he had built innovative browser features to improve customer experience. While still a researcher at hearth, the startup world has deeply impacted his profile thanks to a direct exposure to both VCs and product/team management. He is now working at Bell Labs with the goal to help bridge the gap between research and development.
